The Turtle:
Most people know that if a turtle falls over on its back, it cannot turn over and if no one flips it back over, it will die. I was driving down the road by a lake one day and saw a turtle on its back. I pulled over, got out of my car and walked over to flip the turtle back on its feet. But as I reached toward the side of its shell the upside down turtle hissed and snapped with such strength that the he spun his shell and his snapping mouth toward my hand. I knew that it had to want to be upright, but it was too scared to let me help. I looked around and found a stick. As I got the leverage I needed to flip the turtle upright he hissed and growled and snapped at the stick. Finally on his feet, and without a word of thanks, he walked back toward the water. Satisfied that he was safe, I drove away, thinking of my walk with God.

There have been times when I was on my back; praying for a way to get back on my feet. Did I recognize help when it arrived? Did I stubbornly push away a friend who would have put me back on the right track? How about you? Have you ever hissed and snapped at the one who was only trying to help?  Our pride keeps us on our spiritual back. We must allow those who God places in our life to flip us back over. Otherwise, we might die, upside down in our sin. ©Pamela Sonnenmoser Ministries

Spiritual Pedicure:
Have you ever gotten a professional pedicure? It is amazing how quickly and comfortably they can make dry, calloused feet look and feel great. Unfortunately the effects of the pedicure don’t last long without daily care of those polished toes and pumiced heels. A week without lotions and potions and we are back to the same callouses and dry skin we started with.

Walking on dry, cracked heels is painful and walking around with a dry spirit or cracked faith is painful too.

Many Christians go to church on Sundays to get their spiritual pedicure. We sing, pray, smile and enjoy the comfort of being surrounded by people who love the Lord. Unfortunately we will become spiritually dry in just a day or two if we are not applying the healing balm of God’s Word to our lives daily.  It is only through the study of God’s word that we can recognize a hangnail in our life before it becomes painful. It is daily prayer that strengthens our faith and lets us walk lightly through our days. Most of us would never dream of missing a day of applying lotion to our skin, yet we often ask God to wait for us on row 7 seat 2 until we are ready to come back the next week, dry and calloused and in pain yet again. Remember to care for the needs of your spirit each day just as you do the needs of your body. You will be amazed to see the beauty in each step you take. ©Pamela Sonnenmoser Ministries

Work, watch, pray

I went into a gift shop in Illinois recently. The clerks were standing behind the counter as I walked in and you could easily see that they were engrossed in conversation. As I looked through the store they never missed a beat and they were talking at a volume that was much too high for a place of business. I almost laughed aloud as the girls pointed their finger at each other talking about who would be in the most trouble for not doing her job while their boss was out of the store. I picked up a couple of items and went to the counter where I asked the girls when their boss would return. They said that they had no idea and then giggled as they explained to me that he had left a list of things that they needed to do before he came back, but they had not done even one of the things on the list.

As they talked I was reminded that the one I serve will come back some day, and I have no idea when. He has left a list of things that need to be done before he comes. The great part is that His list is easy and the burden His list is light. We must believe in Him…and believe Him. When we can mark YES LORD on our list the rest will be completed in HIM.

Fishing

My husband, John, and I love to fish in the Missouri River. Sitting in our boat, lines in the water, God’s creation surrounding every breath we take. It is my favorite place to be. Of course it is a lot more fun when we are catching fish. I don’t even mind baiting my own hook. During one particular fishing trip we were plagued by fish that were actually jumping into the boat. It is so annoying to have these slimy disgusting carp jumping from all sides, slapping their slimy bodies across the boat, sometimes even landing right in  your lap. As they jumped we tried to block them from landing in the boat. Those that got passed our defenses were thrown out as quickly as we could catch the slimy annoyance and toss it back into the river. It was terrible.

Recently I heard a pastor speaking about being fishers of men and what that looks like. I began to think of those Carp. How many people do we meet and dismiss because we don’t like the way they smell or look. Is God sending people our direction that are ready for harvest that we are ignoring, or worse yet, are they jumping into the boat only to be rejected and tossed aside? It breaks my heart to think that I might miss the gift of leading someone to the Lord because I am so busy fishing that I am annoyed by the disturbance in the boat.  Lord please make me a fisher of men and let me not be a sorter of souls. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Click Apply

I have a love – hate relationship with my computer. I love it when it makes my life easier, and hate it when something doesn’t work the way I want it to work. I was trying to change some settings one day and was ready to use my entire system for target practice because nothing I did changed anything. I would go into the system, click the places that needed to be clicked, hit okay and return to the EXACT SAME THING I had been trying to change. After more than an hour of frustration I saw what I had been doing wrong. It was right there in front of me. The apply button. I had to click apply for any of my changes to be saved.

We go through this kind of frustration in our walk with the Lord sometimes. We want to change, we want to do all that God wants us to do. We read the Bible, repeat a prayer and say Okay…I have changed. But before we know it nothing is changed.

A woman came to me one day frustrated with her faith. She wanted her life to change, but it seemed impossible to her. I asked her if Jesus was the Lord of her life. When she said yes, I asked what that meant. She said she didn’t know. To her it was only a title, not a position, she had not applied His Lordship to her life. It’s right there in front of us. Yet somehow we miss it. It is time to click apply.

Wow…the first week is complete

paraphraselogo

Amazing, Astonishing, Absolutely God!!! That is all I can think of as we put the first week of Pamela’s Paraphrase in the old scrapbook and begin the second week on the air. God’s timing is so perfect. I pray that you are blessed by the words that HE speaks to my heart as I pray, seeking the next weeks and months of devotional paraphrase. It is amazing to see the ways in which God gives us spiritual truth in our every day life.

I would love to read your comments and even your ideas for future devotionals.

I would also appreciate your prayers for this ministry. We have been praying about adding an hour program on Saturdays to teach more about the devotional topics and to take YOUR phonecalls live on the air. It is all according to the leading of the Holy Spirit and God’s will for the ministry but we know God is limitless and that he has plans for everything that HE begins.

Have a blessed week in Jesus,

Pamela

Of flowers and weeds
Call me crazy but I have a deep affection for flowers that other people would call weeds. Morning glories, Queen Anne’s Lace, even bright pink thistles. I will never forget the day that I brought a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers into the house. I put them in a vase on the table, sure that everyone would be so happy to see the bright decoration.
As my mother – in – law walked through my door she stopped and gasped in horror. “Why in the world do you have a jug full of weeds on your table?” she asked. With her next breath I received a dissertation about the horrors of cutting sunflowers from the soybean fields. These bright yellow blossoms that made my day brighter were a thorn in her side.
We can leave the same impressions on people. Are their people in your life that would say you are like a flower to them, brightening their day, yet the next person might say that you are like a troublesome weed? As we walk with the Lord the fragrance we leave behind should be sweet. If we are not a blessing and encouragement to those we meet it’s time to ask the Lord to do some pruning in our hearts. ©Pamela Sonnenmoser Ministries
